How to Build a Good Base Tan

When done correctly it allows tanners to not only get the best looking tan, but also makes tanning as cost effective as possible.  One of the main problems with tanning salons is under trained staff that does not know how to accurately gauge new client's skin type and make educated decisions on which level of tanning equipment they should be using as well as the exposure time that they need to start at.  There is no exact science behind the building of a base tan, but there are general rules that can greatly improve the results.  Often times the sales associates recommend a new client use the highest power bed because they are paid a commission on each sale and they will make the most money if they sell the client a high-end membership or package.  In reality it is much better for the client to start with an entry level tanning bed or booth and work their way up to the high end equipment.

Indoor tanners should never leave a salon with red, burnt skin.  Sun burns are the body's natural defense to over exposure.  Clients often want to get the biggest "bang for the buck" and so they try and maximize the exposure time.  In doing so they actually get the worst results because they damage their skin by burning it.  The burning causes the skin to dry out and it flakes off prematurely taking any color they did receive with it.  You can build a good base in either tanning beds or booths, but often a mixture of both is the best because they all contain different levels of UVA and UVB.  By having a regiment that mixes both tanning beds the customer receives a broader spectrum of UVA and UVB which results in a more even natural tan.

It's important to use tanning lotion and moisturizer before and after any tanning session because dry skin naturally exfoliates and all the pigment in this skin will be lost which is often times the skin that has received the color.   To help jump start a tan use a lotion with a lot of bronzers.  This gives you the instant results while your skin has time to mature to a beautiful bronze color.
